Fleas

  • Fleas are small insects about 2 to 5 mm long.
  • They do not have wings, but they have very powerful legs and can jump as far as 30 cm.
  • Fleas are parasites of warm-blooded animals like rats, cats and dogs. They suck blood from these animals most of the time. But, when the host animal dies, the fleas leave the dead host and jump to another host, sometimes human.
  • Fleas spend most of their life on the host or on the host’s nests.
  • The life cycle of a flea has 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult.
  • Under favourable conditions, the whole life cycle can take between 3 weeks to 1 year depending on the species. Generally, fleas can live up to 100 days.
  • The common flea species in Singapore are the oriental rat flea (Xenopsyllacheopis), cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis), and dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis)

Signs of infestation: body scratching displayed by your pets, e.g. cats and dogs, and sighting of adult fleas.

Why Control Them?

  • Xenopsyllacheopis, the Oriental rat flea, causes bubonic plague and murine typhus.
  • Other types of fleas like the cat and dog fleas do not cause disease but are serious pests because the discomfort caused by them may lead to unpredictable and aggressive behaviour of your pets.
  • The "flea bite" allergic reaction for some people is quite severe.
